Endurance Challenge
Fitness Opportunity for MDP Alumni
Beginning in 2012 with Class 24 a fitness challenge was added to the MDP curriculum. It is called the Endurance Challenge and is named for the Ernest Shackleton south pole expedition of 1914. The expedition became stranded near the pole and the story of how, over the next year and a half, Shackleton was able to keep them together and lead them out is an amazing case-study of leadership. It is an example of the Mind, Body, and Spirit development which is at the core of MDP. The MDP curriculum now includes the documentary film of the expedition as a leadership case-study.
The Endurance Challenge consists of three parts:
1. Shackleton Mt. Pisgah Climb
Most alumni have already done this.
Wednesday, September 23, 2015
2. South Georgia Island 5-Miler
At the Edneyville campus, 800 ft. of elevation gain, with a time limit of 2.5 hours.
Tuesday, October 20, 2015
3. Stromness Station 10-Miler
A walk/run on the trail that runs from Erwin to Dunn, flat, with a time limit of 3 hours.
Wednesday, November 18, 2015
Any alumni who have done Mt. Pisgah and come and successfully complete the 2nd and 3rd parts of the challenge will receive a glass block like the one pictured. The block represents a block of polar ice and is 6” high by 5” wide by 4” deep. Your block will have your individual class number.
Please contact Josh Phillips at [email protected] with any questions.
